DV2901 A Tuck Roll and Flex - Modelling part 3

Today I  had a discussion with my tutor about what I need to do and how to accomplish it. He showed me again on how I could do this and now it makes more sense, I think I'm more comfortable with how to do it.

He still let me use the character model from the visor like I did yesterday, and showed me how to create the armour round it. The thing I was doing wrong was that I tried to keep the panels right close to body like a layer of skin, but now I have create actual pieces of armour.

I feel like I'm getting better and understand more about what I need to do.

DV2901 A Tuck, Roll and Flex - Modelling part 2

I have been thinking about how to do the model for a few days, and i attempted to do both ways I can think of and I find both of them a little confusing but I believe that will be fixed with just practise. The main problem I have is that with creating my armour around the Andy rig is that the rig is too small and looks out of proportion; but I believe I have fixed that, thanks to one of my peers he showed me the visor and that there is already made characters as templates. This could make it easier for me to keep the right proportions of my character.

I also feel that my character is pretty similar to the character template in build and shapes, which will help me get what I want.

I created the model again using the technique that my tutor has told me to do.

This is how i started it, but i didn't feel comfortable because i didn't understand what i was doing 100%. but I will talk with my tutor and hopeful i will be able to understand what i am doing and what to do.

DV2901 A Tuck Roll and Flex - Modelling

Today I started modelling, now its time to jump in the deep end and re learn and learn more on how to use Maya. As seen in the previous post I have created the model sheet for my character. I learnt how to import the image into the image plane. once I had the images into the maya, i then was ready to start modelling and create my character.

This is what i see on the program, this way i can see both the side and front and make sure its what i want. As i was doing my work my tutor came over and suggested that to make it easier to create the armour over the Andy rig which was given to us earlier in the term. This way i don't have to focus on human proportions and can have my character already rigged. This is going to be a good learning curve for me to improve my work but to also help with personal projects.

My tutor gave me and others a demo into creating my armour in maya over the Andy rig, to make sure it gives off the hard edge and make it look like armour, i would need to bevel the armour parts and use the insert edge loop tool to help make it hard and sharp. After seeing this it made me realise that it can work and would make it better and easier.

I started modelling and i created a triangle shape, my tutor looked over and saw what i had done and told me that i shouldn't do it that way, because its better to animated in quads, but triangles are the next best thing but for this i should try and create my model all in quads to make it easier.

I started creating the armour around the Andy rig by creating a cube and only have one face, and extrude the edges to create hollow armour pieces.

I started to do model around the Andy rig, but as I continued to do it I got confused and found myself stuck because I wasn't sure how to do it and how it was going to work. I had a little thought about the software Mudbox because when I have watched behind the scenes on animations, they have said that they only use Maya for rigging and animation, and character modelling in Mudbox. Unfortunately I am really confused in what to do for my model.

DV2901 A Tuck Roll and Flex - Character development

Today i decided to start creating my character, i keep forgetting about the two parts of the module. I needed to create my model sheet of my character.

Using the research from before I have came up with an idea for what to do.

This was the first design I came up with. This design was a good idea but it isn't ideal for this module and for what I need to do. As you can see in this design there is a lot of clothing, clothing that would move in and need to be animated too. The character is also showing his face and skin; this will make things a lot harder for me when I model and animate this design. The design wont look realistic and I personal feel that it will be really complicated.

This is what I came up with. This design was created using some of the reference from before, and I also took into consideration modelling. I didn't want to design a character that I can't actually create, to make sure I can create it, I decided to create a Robot humanoid showing no flesh, and as you can see in the picture above the shapes are not crazy they are pretty easy to create and can be done. I'm only worried that I don't know if i will be able to create all the shapes, looks too complicated like its too many shapes, but yeah I spoke to the tutor and he said its fine and i personal want to do it so i am going to.
